20.05.02 Big dick
got a good email back from one of you guys on my list saying
" I guess you paint what you paint because there's a clientele
for it, but the distorted dicks don't do much for me personally."
the email was overall very nice in tone and content and it's possible
he might be speaking for a lot of you. so i'm sharing my reply
with everybody.
-----------
interesting, and thanks. so maybe you'd prefer me to be just an
artist who depicts the male figure "as is", as opposed
to an erotic artist marketing to a gay audience. it's a fine line
and one i can cross, but i honestly enjoy the gay stereotype side.
last night i was influenced by the fat dicks of Harry Bush's art,
and it was wierd because just some few minutes before your email i had decided my cocks were maybe too big. but
i'd already listed the paintings on ebay and i was tired, so i
thought i'd give it a rest for a week before making any decisions
regarding them. and yes, the marketing does take a lot of energy,
but it drives me to produce as well. i'm not goal-oriented especially,
but i know that if i just keep going i'll end up somewhere nearer
my 'ideal' if i'm lucky.
other artists i talk to are a little surprised of how much i've
sold on ebay, but are friendly and share. we generally agree that
the erotic sells better than the discrete, and that exageration
sells better than normal, but that ebay is limiting us to an 'discreteness'
beyond what many of us would like to show/sell. but as i never expected, really, to sell as much as i have, and
always feel like it's a bubble that will burst unexpectedly, it
would be ungracious to complain. besides, the novelty of erotic
art on ebay may wear thin and then what will we do? so in some
way, those big cocks were maybe an over-reaction to my self-imposed
censure .... now i'm thinking - can i post this in the general
audience section- cause that's where the viewers/buyers are. so sometimes i resent a little the
ebay reality and overdo the pornographic aspects- cocks overly
emphasized, inviting gestures, etc. and come up with an image
that will only be allowed in the mature-audiences- only section,
an area where the number of viewers has dropped off dramatically
and decent prices are very hard to come by. ebay has reasons for this marginalization, and i accept
them, but still i'm of the opinion that in today's reality these
images, however exaggerated or explicit, are harmless. but i'm
getting off the subject, sorry.
anyway, that's what's neat about a painting of a nude male body
with no 'message'. the viewer can't help but supply the message.
and it's as varied and different as whoever is viewing. i think
that's cool.
